Years ago, while prowling the back roads with my wife Coleen in search of painting subjects, I came across this scene just outside of the small community of Waymansville, in Bartholomew County, Indiana. Rounding a bend in the road I was immediately taken with the composition of the line of the odd shaped houses and barns leading to the school bus parked at the end of the driveway. The scene itself could tell a hundred stories and I could see as many paintings. I took several reference photos with my camera in hopes of painting it later in my studio. As it worked out, I loved it so much that I did paint it, several times, each a different size, different format, and even different season. I'm so glad I have the reference photos to paint from because upon returning years later, I found the house was empty and derelict, one of the barns was caving in and the other, along with the school bus, were gone.
